Greenport Historical Society Presentation by Leo Bower:
Hudson’s Shacks – A personal look at Hudson’s Shantytown
DATE: Thursday, Jun 21at 7 PM
After a brief business meeting, Leo Bower will present a slide show from his personal collection of old Shantytown photos. Leo grew up on Front Street in a two-family house that was razed for Urban Renewal and is now the site of the Terrace Apartments. His father Philip Bower, Sr. worked at the Atlas Cement Company and bought a shack in 1963. Leo and his brothers boated and fished for shad and herring with their father in the 1970s and early 1980s. They converted an old soda machine and used it to smoke the fish before selling them. We’ll hear Leo tell stories of some of the other owners — and some of the oldest residents of North Bay Shantytown.
You’re invited to join us and learn more about this way of life that existed on our Hudson waterfront. Leo will share his memories of the sense of community that existed there from the 1930s until the 1980s, and we’ll look at the photos of a time gone by.
LOCATION: Greenport Community Center, Town Hall Drive, Hudson NY (last building on the left); opposite the Greenport Town Hall.
FREE open to the public. Refreshments will be available after the talk.
